The pace of change has shifted , so leadership must too
Most leaders would agree that change isn’t slowing down, indeed many would say it’s speeding up. The pace, complexity and unpredictability of modern business means that the old models of leadership that were built on control, certainty, authority and expertise, simply don’t fit the world we’re operating in. The models that worked in a stable environment struggle in one defined by constant movement, ambiguity, challenge and disruption.
Old style leadership was built for a predictable world. Adaptive leadership is built for the world we actually live in.
What is Adaptive Leadership?
Adaptive leadership is the ability to mobilise people to tackle challenges where the answer isn’t known and the environment is shifting. It’s less about having the answers and more about creating the conditions for people to connect, share, learn, experiment, collaborate, and problem‑solve, using more of their collective brilliance.
Adaptive leaders don’t just manage change, they lead change and they lead the learning.
Technical problems vs Adaptive challenges
In the past, leaders tended to solve technical problems, these are issues that could be fixed with knowledge, process, expertise or authority. Technical challenges are predictable and so if you apply expertise, follow procedure and the problem is resolved.
Today, most challenges are adaptive. They demand behavioural change, new mindsets, psychological safety and collective learning.
Examples include:
Culture transformation
Hybrid working
AI integration
Sustainability and ESG
Customer experience redesign
Leadership capability building
These aren’t solved by a spreadsheet - or even by AI - these are solved by people willing to learn, test, share, grow and adapt together.
Technical problems need expertise. Adaptive challenges need behaviour change.
How Adaptive Leaders think and behave
Adaptive leaders operate differently from traditional leaders. They:
Ask more (good) questions and give fewer orders
Empower others rather than try and control them
Use conflict as data, not danger to be ignored
Lead with curiosity, humility, authenticity and courage
Create psychological safety so teams can experiment and grow
Encourage collaboration over hierarchy
Focus on learning, not just performance
They understand that leadership today is less about being the hero and more about being the 'host'.... the one who convenes, connects and enables others to lead, to be at their best more often and feel more able to give and commit to the team and task.
Why Adaptive Leadership matters
This shift is both philosophical and practical. Organisations with adaptive leaders and cultures are proven to be more.....
Resilient - able to respond to disruption
Innovative - generating new ideas and solutions
Commercially successful - faster decision‑making and better execution
Engaged - teams feel trusted, valued, and safe
They move faster because people are learning together, not waiting for permission.
Old Style vs Adaptive Leadership, a visual reminder
The attached graphic captures the essence of Old Style vs Adaptive Leadership, offering a clear visual comparison:
Old leadership relied on control / Adaptive leadership relies on empowerment.
Old leadership sought stability / Adaptive leadership thrives on experimentation.
Old leadership avoided conflict / Adaptive leadership uses conflict as insight.
Old leadership valued predictability / Adaptive leadership embraces ambiguity.
It’s a fundamental shift from managing systems to developing people.
Building Adaptive Capacity: Our 100‑Day Accelerator
In our 100‑day leadership accelerator coaching programmes, we help leaders build adaptive capacity turning uncertainty and challenges into opportunity, and learning into performance.
These programmes are:
Short cycle (100-days)
High impact
Practical and behavioural
Designed for real world 'in the moment' leadership challenges
Leaders move from reaction, knowing and control to collaboration, reflection and learning. Adaptive leadership isn’t theory. Adaptive leadership is a set of skills and behaviours that can be practised, refined and embedded, for good.
The essential Leadership capability for a changing world
In a world that won’t stop changing, adaptive leadership is essential. It might be the difference between surviving disruption and shaping the future. The leaders, and businesses who thrive will be those who can learn faster than the pace of change, and be able to help teams access more of their potential knowledge, creativity, ambition, innovation and skills - which currently remain untapped - in order to lead business change, better, more effectively, effectively, and move faster to value.
Adaptive leadership is not about being perfect, far from it, but it’s definitely about being present. It’s about leading with courage, curiosity, openness and compassion, and building cultures where people can connect, adapt, learn and lead together.
The most adaptive organisations will lead change and they are the ones that learn how to keep changing well.
